As Your Microsoft Office 365 Consultant in San Francisco, Intivix Can Bring Your Office Up to Date
Let’s focus for a minute on one of the key players in the Office 365 suite – Word – just to reiterate how powerful and indispensable these tools are in the data management, transmission, and sharing of information within and between organizations worldwide.
Here’s a brief look at just how much Microsoft Word has been helping individuals and companies express themselves creatively in a computer-networked world.
Microsoft Word: History in the Making
The first version of Microsoft Word was developed by Charles Simonyi and Richard Brodie, former Xerox programmers hired by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1981.The first Word version, Word 1.0, was released in October 1983 for Xenix and MS-DOS. The first Windows version of Word was released in 1989, with a slightly improved interface. When Windows 3.0 was released in 1990, Word became a huge commercial success. Word for Windows 1.0 was followed by Word 2.0 in 1991 and Word 6.0 in 1993. Then it was renamed to Word 95 and Word 97, Word 2000 and Word for Office XP (to follow Windows commercial names).
With the release of Windows 3.0 in 1990, sales began to pick up and Microsoft soon became the market leader for word processors for IBM PC-compatible computers. In 1991, Microsoft capitalized on Word for Windows’ increasing popularity by releasing a version of Word for DOS, version 5.5, that replaced its unique user interface with an interface similar to a Windows application. When Microsoft became aware of the Year 2000 problem, it made Microsoft Word 5.5 for DOS available for download free. As of March 2014, it is still available for download from Microsoft’s website. In 1991, Microsoft embarked on a project code-named Pyramid to completely rewrite Microsoft Word from the ground up. Both the Windows and Mac OS versions would start from the same code base. It was abandoned when it was determined that it would take the development team too long to rewrite and then catch up with all the new capabilities that could have been added in the same time without a rewrite. Instead, the next versions of Word for Windows and Mac OS, dubbed version 6.0, both started from the code base of Word for Windows 2.0.
With the release of Word 2003, the numbering was again year-based. Since then, Word 2007, Word 2010, Word 2013, and most recently, Word 2016 have all been released for Windows.
Released in 2016, Microsoft Word 16 is the most modern, up-to-date version of the venerable word processing application. New features include the tell me, share, and faster shape formatting options. Others include the “work together in real time“ feature which allows users to store documents on Share Point or OneDrive, improved version history and smart lookup tool as well. As normal, several editions of the program were released as well, including one for home and one for business.
