A relaxing, enjoyable time AND business potential should be had by all.
It’s the world’s largest earthquake drill, and this year marks the 10th Anniversary of the event’s founding.
What’s an earthquake drill? – Well, it’s like a fire drill…except it’s earthquakes, not fire.
Don’t worry. This disaster readiness event is simply informational, relaxing, and fun – No running or hiding under tables involved.
This year, 9.1 million people are registered to participate in California, along with 16.9 million more worldwide.
Federal, state, and local emergency management experts and other official preparedness organizations all agree that “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” is the appropriate action to reduce injury and death during earthquakes. The ShakeOut is our opportunity to practice how to protect ourselves during earthquakes.
It’s likely not news to you, but did you know that according to EarthquakeTrack.com, San Francisco has A LOT of earthquakes?
In fact, in the past year, 323 earthquakes measuring more than 1.5 on the Richter Scale have been recorded in the area. The largest in the past year was recorded just across the state line in Hawthorne, Nevada. That earthquake tipped the scale at 5.7.
So, having the right information to protect yourself and your company from an earthquake disaster is essential.
(Those of us who recall the Big Quake in ’89 need no reminding about this.)
But, our focus during the Great California Shakeout will be all about good information and have a good time.
Your past experience with earthquakes may give you a false sense of safety; you didn’t do anything, or you ran outside, yet you survived with no injuries. Or perhaps you got under your desk and others thought you overreacted.
However, you likely have never experienced the kind of strong earthquake shaking that is possible in much larger earthquakes: sudden and intense back and forth motions of several feet per second will cause the floor or the ground to jerk sideways out from under you, and every unsecured object around you could topple, fall, or become airborne, potentially causing serious injury.
This is why you must learn to immediately protect yourself after the first jolt…don’t wait to see if the earthquake shaking will be strong!
SonicWALL is an industry leader in IT security, data backup, and recovery solutions, and we are grateful for their sponsorship of this Great California Shakeout event, which will focus on both physical and IT security disaster preparedness.
SonicWall, originally a private company headquartered in San Jose, California, and Dell subsidiary from 2012 to 2016, sells a range of Internet appliances primarily directed at content control and network security. These include devices providing services for network firewalls, UTMs, VPNs, and anti-spam for email. SonicWALL solutions also work to solve issues surrounding HIPAA and PCI compliance issues.
With SonicWALL’s participation in this event, the message can be read as, “Disaster preparedness goes deeper and further than having a few extra supplies ready, or the false sense of security that comes with relying only on past disaster experience.”
The message and focus with both the Great California ShakeOut event and Intivix and SonicWALL’s combined participation could also be that earthquakes can be both natural and human-caused.
What do we mean by that?
You may have already guessed that we mean “earthquakes” that shake-up and shake-out your computer network and data security presumptions.
It means you need to be covered on disaster readiness and security both physically and structurally and within the physical structure and cybernetic capacity of your IT network.
The two types of security run closely together these days, and you and your company need to be prepared.
So, are you ready to register for the big ShakeOut Event?

Wonder how your business will survive an earthquake shakeup? This “earthquake drill” event should answer that question in a big way. Let’s talk in person about it when you come to our Great California Shakeout event at Destino Latin Bistro on Friday, Oct. 27 from 4-7pm.
We’ll see you there!
